Former Barcelona start Deco believes that if it wasn’t for Messi and Cristiano dominating the media headlines, Andrés Iniesta would be hands-down winner of the prestigious Balon D’Or award every time.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, former Barcelona midfielder Deco was asked if he’d stayed longer at the club, would Iniesta have grown to become the player he is today?
“That’s crazy. Speaking of Iniesta, I only recall one player we could compare him to and that’s Zidane. Andrés is phenomenal! What’s happening is that you have someone like Messi who blinds the media with his greatness, but for those of us inside football, Iniesta is a beast.”
So does Deco think Iniesta is the man who really deserves to win the Balon D’or?
“Certainly he should win the Balon D’Or. The only problem is that ahead of him, you have two animals like Leo (Messi) and Cristiano (Ronaldo). It’s difficult, because Cristiano is another type of animal.”
Turning attention to Neymar, Deco gave his thoughts on whether the young Brazilian star can reach the same heights, as the likes of Messi, Cristiano, or Iniesta.
“He has the potential, that’s for certain. There’s a long road ahead though. Speaking about Messi, Cristiano or Iniesta is easy now, because they’ve already developed and have got there. Football isn’t only about having quality, but about developing it too.”
